1. Keep the energy (heat) inside
This simplest thing you can do to create an energy efficient home and save on your heating is ensure you keep the heat inside your home;
- Check for drafts around doors and windows and seal where appropriate
- Close curtains as soon as the sun goes down
- Close doors to rooms that don’t need heating
2. Check your fireplace
When was the last time you had your fire serviced? A little bit of TLC can make all the difference when it comes to energy efficiency. We recommend having your fire serviced annually, for further information on this visit our previous blog ‘Top tips for servicing your fireplace’
3. Compare energy retails
Have you compared energy prices from different companies lately? With so many providers pricing changes regularly, the time spent to compare a few quotes could end with a significant saving on your next bill and over the course of the year.
4. Check the temperature setting
Keep your thermostat between 18°C and 20°C – each degree over 20°C uses about 10% more energy, resulting in a big increase in your heating bill.

5. Consider upgrading your heater
If you’ve ticked off steps 1-4 and your heating bill still won’t budge it may be worth considering replacing your old drafty fire. A Regency gas or wood fire can turn your old fireplace into something much more energy efficient, which equals savings in your pocket.
